Hello friends,

Two weeks ago, I wrote about the thread that has run through so much of my documentary work over the past 20 years: people willing to pursue something they believe matters, long before they know how the story will end.

Next Tuesday, David Tsai and I finally get to start sharing those stories.

Before the Cure launches September 1.

And today, we can show you where that pursuit has led.

Over the past year, we've been talking with scientists, physicians, founders, patients, parents, and advocates about what happens long before a medical breakthrough makes headlines.

Again and again, we've found that the most compelling part isn't the science alone. It's the people behind it and the deeply personal reasons they refuse to give up.

Here's your first look. Listen to Before the Cure trailer —>

And next Tuesday, we begin with two stories that show exactly what we mean.

(EP 01) Dr. Tim Nelson spent twenty years at Mayo Clinic learning how to rebuild hearts that surgeons could only repair. But getting a breakthrough from the lab to the patients who need it can take decades. So he decided to build a new model. Days before we recorded this conversation, he bought a 600,000-square-foot hospital—for one dollar.

(EP 02) Ilana Jacqueline spent the first nineteen years of her life being told her symptoms weren’t real. She turned that experience into fifteen years of patient advocacy and a provocative belief: patients have never had more power to change the healthcare system than they do right now.

If these conversations resonate with you, following the show today is one of the most meaningful ways you can help us launch. And if someone comes to mind who might connect with these stories, please forward this newsletter to them.

Next Tuesday, we stop talking about what we're building and start sharing the stories.

I can't wait.

Onward,

Timothy Wheeler
