What is a mobile stroke unit?
A mobile stroke unit is a specialized ambulance equipped with a CT scanner, a stroke-trained medical team, and the tools needed to diagnose and begin treating a stroke before the patient reaches the hospital.
Why does faster stroke treatment matter?
During a stroke, every minute without treatment can affect brain tissue and a patient’s ability to speak, walk, swallow, or live independently. This urgency is often summarized by the phrase “time is brain.”
Do mobile stroke units improve patient outcomes?
In the BEST-MSU trial, treating patients approximately 40 minutes earlier resulted in less disability for 27 of every 100 patients, including 11 additional patients who were disability-free.
What will it take to bring mobile stroke care to more communities?
Mobile stroke units combine emergency transportation, medical imaging, specialists, and treatment in the field. Expanding this model will require coordination across emergency services, healthcare systems, public agencies, philanthropy, and reimbursement policy.
